Lampalumina is a delicate lamp collection born from the deep interest of Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for « Ceramica alumina », a highly technical ceramic with subtle qualities.
As the development of leading technologies requires huge financial and time investment, it is a rare challenge for industries to head outside their usual application field. In this very case, the project emanated from the dialog between two companies of the same family: Industrie Bitossi, an international group engag
ed into high-tech production of technical ceramics and Bitossi Ceramiche, a craftsmanship structure serving design projects thanks to historical know-how. The idea was to concentrate the strengths of both sisters in order to conceive a specific project marrying the precision, the solidity and the texture of industrial ceramics to the flexibility and openness of craft.
In forty years of manufacturing by Industrie Bitossi, « Ceramica alumina » had essentially been used in the industrial ceramic field for grinding and firing purposes and in aerospace. Used in sheets or in blocks, it had never been expected to follow free forms with precision, while the texture remained unexploited. With the three lighting objects of the collection for Bitossi Ceramiche, the softness of the material is revealed by the white, almost never-ending surface offering velvet-like tactile sensations, when the technical characteristics allow absolute precision in the realization. This unexpected combination grants those small lighting objects a precious dimension, highlighted by the thinness of the finishing.
Using this high-tech material for domestic purposes also raises the question of the ceramics’ use for applications other than crockery or architectural elements. As the objects are the result from long research and numerous experiments, the fist collection will remain a short edition but should open the path for further developments.
